The statue, which was placed in 1910, was made by the sculptor Thomas Brock, and it commemorates the actor Henry Irving (1838-1905) who distinguished himself by taking part in all stages of the production of the plays: direction, lighting, costumes and of course as an actor in the main roles.

On the base of the statue, below the player’s name, appears a text hidden by the tarpaulins that were placed as part of the renovation of the area:
