The sign is on the wall of the house where Captain Isidore Newman lived, a Jew who was a British secret agent in the Special Operations Executive, a body that operated in the countries occupied by the Nazis. Newman, who was operating in France, was caught after the person in charge of the spy ring was caught and turned Newman in. He was sent to the Gestapo prison in Paris, and then to the Mauthausen concentration camp, where he was executed on September 7, 1944.
Newman received the Order of the British Empire, the French War Cross and the French Resistance Medal.
