On the sign:
THE OLD HIGH SCHOOL
In 1856 this was opened to replace the Old Grammar School. The observatory and tower were donated by Sir Henry Campbell Bannerman, MP for Stirling and Prime Minister 1905-1908. Signs of the zodiac flank a l6th century doorway, and Latin mottos refer to the Trees of Knowledge and of Life. Carved on the upper floors are the rose, thistle and shamrock, for England, Scotland and Ireland. The Stirling Highland Hotel opened in March 1991.
