On the sign:
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea logo The Council of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea logo
ALBERT BRIDGE NOTICE ALL TROOPS MUST BREAK STEP WHEN MARCHING OVER THIS BRIDGE
The sign is on the Albert Bridge Click for sign's details, a bridge known to be prone to vibrations. There was a military camp near the bridge, and in order to prevent the bridge from collapsing as a result of uniform marching of soldiers (vibrations as a result of the bridge’s self-resonance), the soldiers were asked to stop marching in rhythm the moment they cross the bridge.
Although the military camp is no longer there, the sign still remains.
In the next photo taken that day you can see the bridge, and the pavilion on which the sign is located Click for a larger image
