Comments:
François Rabelais (1494-1553), known for writing the Gargantua and Pantagruel series of pleasure-seeking books that were banned by the French Church upon publication, was born in the Loire Valley, so it is likely that this is why his statue is located here.

The statue, made by Étienne Henri Dumaige, was made in 1879 and installed in 1880

The text on the base of the statue is from Rabelais’ "Preface to the Readers" in Gargantua, and is shown here enlarged Click for a larger image

Translation of the text on the sign:
It is better to write with laughter than with tears
because laughter is the property of man
