COUSTOU GUILLAUME Lyon, 1677 - Paris, 1746
DAPHNÉ POURSUIVIE PAR APOLLON MOULAGE
MARBRE, 1715, PLACE AUX TUILERIES EN 1747; EXPOSÉ AU MUSÉE DU LOUVRE
One of the statues in the Tuileries Gardens. The statue by Guillaume Coustou depicts Daphne, a nymph associated with rivers and springs. It is one of the statues of running figures found in the gardens. Apollo, the sun god, fell in love with her and chased her. When she saw that Apollo was about to capture her, she asked her father for help, who turned her into a laurel tree. Since then, this tree has been associated with Apollo, and the wreath at the Olympic Games dedicated to Apollo is made of laurel leaves and branches. The 1.32-meter-high statue, made in 1713-1715, was placed in the Tuileries Gardens in 1747
