The Tuileries Rose Gardens: a Legacy of the 17th Century

This part of the garden has changed little since André Le Nôtre redesigned the Tuileries for King Louis XIV starting in 1664.

The rose gardens occupy an uneven space between the horseshoe ramps and the terraces. Le Nôtre used spiral designs for the perimeter. Historical images show that this plot had long been edged by plants with upward growth: pruned yews, then climbing plants on stakes and lastly, roses. In the 1990s, the landscape gardeners Pascal Cribier and Louis Benech remained faithful to the spirit of Le Nôtre while creating a hillock overlooking The composition, and an opening to facilitate the work of the gardeners. The flat grass or ’bowling green’ was lanted with lavender. The plants are in shades of pink-red and purple-mauve.
