Comments:
The monument depicts Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), riding his horse (equestrian). The monument was made by John Steell and erected in 1852, the year of the Duke’s death.
Wellesley, who was of Irish descent, was one of the most important military men and statesmen in Britain in the 19th century. He is known for defeating Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, and also participated in dozens of other battles in many countries including the Netherlands, India, Denmark and Spain.
He served as Prime Minister of Britain between the years 1828-1830
