Theme - Abolition & Emancipation
Phoebe Boswell’s design responds to the theme ’Abolition & Emancipation’, which shares the story of the campaign for abolition, its key events, heroes and allies. It also lays bare the full, messy motivations and process of abolition, which were not as pure as often represented.

The Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans meant millions of lives were ended and lost to history. Here we honour ancestors by acknowledging a person we were able to identify by name - at a specific time and place.
We cannot know their story, but we know that they lived.

A series of 36 globes by The World Reimagined, placed in the courtyard of the National Maritime Museum. "The World Reimagined" is a body that aims to bring the transatlantic slave trade and its consequences to humanity to be brought to public attention, with the aim of bringing about equal rights in the inter-racial struggle. 103 such globes were scattered throughout the UK, the current series of 36 globes was displayed in the summer of 2023

The goal of the project is also indicated on the globes:
The World Reimagined works to transform how we understand the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans and its impact on all of us, so that we can make racial justice a reality.
This is not ’Black History’, this is all of our history.

Together, we can create a future in which all can say: I am seen.

Each of the globes is illustrated by a different artist, and each one also features the personal story of a person who was sold into slavery.

The current globe was painted by Phoebe Boswell (1982), multimedia artist and filmmaker. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, she works and lives in London. The theme of the ball is the abolition of slavery.
