The obelisk in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican City was brought to Rome from Egypt in 37 AD by Emperor Caligula. In 1586, the obelisk was moved about 300 meters from its previous location to St. Peter’s Square by Pope Sixtus V, at which time the inscriptions on its base were also added.
