The sign was erected in 2001, on the 55th anniversary of the expulsion of Germans from the Sudetenland (a region in the Czech Republic where mainly Germans lived), to Heidelberg. The expulsion was carried out on the grounds that the Germans supported the Nazi regime, using this claim to transfer and cleanse the area of Germans.
Translation of the text on the sign: ON JUNE 30, 1946
1,200 SUDETTEN GERMAN EXPULSES FROM THE CITY AND JUDICIAL DISTRICT OF ODRAU ARRIVED IN HEIDELBERG IN 40 CATTLE CARS. WE HAD LOST EVERYTHING, WERE DEGRADED, AND WITHOUT PROSPECTS FOR THE FUTURE. DESPITE OUR OWN CONCERNS AND THE POPULATIONS DISGRACES, WE WERE GIVEN HELP AND THE OPPORTUNITY FOR SELF-HELP. HERE WE FOUND A GOOD NEW HOME. FOR THAT WE ARE THANKFUL.
MAY UNION BE RESPECTED FOREVER. MAY PEOPLE IN NEED FIND HELP, JUST AS WE FOUND IT HERE.
TO THE HELMAT EXPELLED PEOPLE FROM STADE AND THE ODRAU COURT DISTRICT
