Translation of the text on the sign: IN HOMAGE TO PHILIP II
The complete restoration of this main square was inaugurated on October 17, 1961. During the reign of Mayor of Madrid, His Excellency Mr. José Finat y Escriva de Romani, Count of Mayalde, the full City Council agreed to place this tablet to perpetuate the memory of His Excellency the First Deputy Mayor, Mr. José María Soler y Díaz-Guijarro, who died in office on June 17, 1963. This work was carried out through his initiative and constant drive.
