A French sculptor and painter of the Romantic period, influenced by the Neoclassical tradition, known for his dramatic and sensual marble works (such as "Woman Bitten by a Serpent", which caused a sensation at the Paris Salon) and for his portrait busts and monuments dedicated to cultural and intellectual figures.
