Born in Paris, France (1811-1890). French Neoclassical and Romantic sculptor. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and was a pupil of the sculptor David d’Angers (David d’Angers). In 1836, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome for sculpture, which enabled him to spend five years studying at the Villa Medici in Rome and to draw inspiration from classical and Renaissance sculpture.
His best-known work is the Medici Fountain in the Luxembourg Gardens. Other works by him adorn the façade of the Louvre Palace, the Odéon Theatre, and the Church of Saint-Augustin.
