Born in London, UK (1819-1891) Sir Joseph William Bazalgette was a civil engineer best known for the construction of the central London sewer system. The system was established following the "Big Stink" event, in which in 1858 most of the residents of central London were forced to leave their homes because of the stench that rose from the Thames River, a stench caused by waste water that was poured into the river. He also designed several bridges in London and other cities
In the house where he lived in London there is a commemorative plaque indicating this fact
