The Crusader Fortress of the Knights of the Hospital and the Ottoman Turkish Citadel of Akko

כאן ניצבה החל מהמאה ה-12 המצודה של מסדר ההוספיטלרים על שם יוחנן הקדוש, שפעל בעכו הצלבנית עד לחורבנה בשנת 1291. על-גבי חורבות המצודה, ששוקמה בתקופה העות’מאנית, במאות ה- 18-17, הוקמו המצודה והארמון של מושלי עכו, ובמחצית המאה ה-19 הקימו כאן השלטונות העות’מאנים בית כלא גדול.
בתקופת המנדט הבריטי (1948-1918) היו כאן מבני ממשל ובית הכלא הגדול ביותר בארץ, שבו נאסרו בין היתר לוחמי ארגוני הלוחמים היהודיים. חלק מהמבנים שימשו לאחר הקמת המדינה ועד שנת 1985 כבית חולים לחולי נפש.

ابتداء من القرن ال ـ ۱۲ قامت هنا قلعة جماعة فرسان الهيكل الهوسبتالريم على اسم القديس يوحنا والتي نشطت في عكا الى ان دمرت سنة ١٢٩١ على انقاض القلعة التي رمت زمن العثمانيين في القرنين ال - ۱۷-۱۸ اقيمت القلعة وقصر والي عكا . وفي منتصف القرن ال -۱۹ اقامت السلطات العثمانية سحنا كبيرا .
وفي زمن الانتداب البريطاني ( ١٩١٨-١٩٤٨ ) كانت هنا مباني الحكام واكبر سحن في البلاد . والذي سحن فيه ايضا مقاتلو المنظمات اليهودية . وقد استعمل قسم من للبنى منذ اقامة الدولة وحتى سنة ١٩٨٥ كمستشفى للامر اض العقلية .

On this site, in the 12th-13th century, towered the fortress of the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of Saint John (the "Hospitallers") who were based in Akko (Acre) until the Muslim conquest of the city in 1291. Over the ruins of the fortress, which was reconstructed by the Ottoman Turks in the 17th and 18th centuries, was built the Citadel and Palace of the Governors of Akko. In the mid-19th century the Ottoman authorities added here a large prison.
Under the British Administration (1918-1948) these buildings served as Government offices and were the largest prison in Palestine. Among those incarcerated there were also the fighters of the Jewish underground. After the Establishment of the State of Israel, until 1985 part of the building complex housed as a mental Hospital.
