The current sign marks the year 1242 - after it was burnt by its inhabitants with a view to causing the Mongols withdrawal, the city is being rebuilt within its borders today. The rebuilt city embraced the Magdeburg Rights - self-determination rights and local government. The sign itself has the Latin inscription stating that the city has adopted the Magdeburg Laws
