The occupation of the neighborhood took place as part of Operation Yevusi, which took place following information that the British were preparing to evacuate parts of Jerusalem. The Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood was occupied by fighters of the Fifth Battalion, but was later forced to withdraw from it because the British wanted to use the transportation route that passed through the neighborhood.
