בתחילת מלחמת העולם הראשונה הורחבה מסילת הברזל בין לוד לירושלים מ-1.00 מטר ל -1.05 מטר - כרוחב המסילה ברכבת החיג’אזית. המסילה החיג’אזית הייתה מסילה ארוכה וחשובה במזרח התיכון, אשר חיברה את דמשק שבסוריה לאל-מדינה הקדושה לאיסלאם שבחיג’אז (כיום ערב הסעודית), ושלוחה שלה עברה גם בחיפה ובעכו וחיזקה את שליטת העות’מאנים באזור. לאחר ההרחבה, התאפשר לקטרי קיטור ולקרונות של הרכבת החיג’אזית לעלות לירושלים. עם כיבוש השטח, שבו עובר הקו, על ידי הבריטים, הם הפעילו לאורכו קטרים שנתפסו שלל או שהושאלו מרכבות במצרים ובסודן. זאת, מפני שבטרם נסיגתם העות’מאנים הספיקו לפנות את מרבית הקטרים שלהם צפונה.

في بداية الحرب العالمية الأولى تم توسيع السكة الحديدية ابن المد والقدس من ال 1.00 م الى 1.05 م ، وفقا لعرض السكة الحديدية الحجازية . كانت السكة الحجازية طويلة ومهمة في الشرق الأوسط ، وربطت دمشق في سوريا بالمدينة المنورة في الحجاز ( المملكة العربية السعودية حاليا ) ، ومر فرع ليها من حيفا وعكا وعززت من سيطرة العثمانيين في المنطقة بعد توسيعها تمكنت القاطرات البخارية وعربات القطار عمر منها الخط على ايدي البريطانيين ، قاموا بتشغيل القاصرات مصر والسودان ، ذلك لأن العثمانيين نجحوا في سحب معظم أخذت غنيمة أو أستعيرت من قطارات في الحجازي من الوصول الى القدس . احتلال المنطقة التي على طوله والتي النشراتهم الى الشمال قبل انسحابهم

At the start of World War I, the track between Lydda (Lod) and Jerusalem was widened from 100 centimeters to 105 centimeters, the gauge of the Hijaz railroad. The Hijaz Railway was the longest and most important rail line in the Near East. It connected Damascus in Syria to the sacred city of Medina in the Hijaz (now Saudi Arabia) and had a branch though Haifa and Akko, strengthening Ottoman rule in the region.
The new, wider gauge made it possible for the Eijaz steam locomotives and, cars to make their way up to Jerusalem. After the British conquered the area through which the line passed, they operated it using captured locomotives taken as spoils or borrowed from the railroads in Egypt and Sudan. This was necessary because the Ottomans had managed to send most of their own locomotives northward before their retreat.

Sign No. 9 in a series of signs placed on or around lighting poles, including the history of the old railway line to Jerusalem, along which its route extends the HaMesila (Railway) Park.
