The establishment of the Jaffa-Jerusalem rail line expedited the arrival in Jerusalem of technologies like electricity and motor vehicles. Once the railway was built and before Jerusalem had electric power, the Ottomans brought in small generators by train, which provided electricity mainly for the army, various institutions and wealthy households. Electric power came to the entire city during the British Mandate; it was decided to build a power station (1) near the railway station (2) to take advantage of tain transport. The first fuel company in Jerusalem (3) was built near the railway station for the same reason, providing fuel both to the electric company and the few motor vehicles in the country, which mainly served public figures and the military, at the start of the British Mandate. During Ottoman rule, there were few motor vehicles in the city, but their numbers grew considerably during the Mandate era, when private individuals began to use them.

The map that appears on the other side of the sign appears to be from a later date (around 1928), since the first power station in Jerusalem was built only in 1928, as indicated on the heritage sites sign of the station next to the current sign Click for sign's details

In the next picture taken that day you can see the old railway track that became a pedestrian track, a bike path next to it, and the sign that surrounds one of the lighting poles Click for a larger image
