On the sign:
W SYNAGOGE 1825-1826 nach einem Entwurf von Joseph Kornhäusel erbaut.
Sign number 21 from the "Vienna - the city introduces itself" series of signs, an initiative established in 1956 as part of the Vienna Festival, which shows significant places in the city. The serial number is displayed at the bottom of the sign. Above the sign are 4 flags of Austria, which is a hallmark of the project, and the possibility of recognizing it from a distance Click for a larger image
The sign is on the Vienna Synagogue building. The synagogue stood on the side of the street, which at the time was only allowed for Christian churches, a fact that saved it from demolition and fire on Kristallnacht in 1938. The synagogue underwent a number of terrorist attacks, in 1979 an explosive was placed in its yard, no one was injured in the explosion. In 1981, the synagogue was attacked by terrorists from the Abu Nidal organization, killing two people and injuring 30.
Above the entrance gate to the synagogue is a sign "באו שעריו בתודה חצרותיו בתהלה" "His gates came in thanksgiving and his courtyards in glory"
And on both sides signs in Hebrew and German: הקהילה היהודית בוינה בית הכנסת הגדול
