Der Wiener Landtag
Der Wiener Landtag hat 100 Abgeordnete. Sie vertreten die wahlberechtigten Wienerinnen und Wiener. Die Abgeordneten des Wiener Landtages sind zugleich Gemeinderätinnen und -räte. Aus dieser Identität ergibt sich auch, dass die Wahlperiode für den Landtag jener des Gemeinderates entspricht. In Wien dauert eine Regierungsperiode fünf Jahre. Im Wiener Landtag werden die Landesgesetze beschlossen. Sie reichen vom Wiener Abfallwirtschaftsgesetz über die Wiener Bauordnung, das Wiener Jugendschutzgesetz und das Wiener Schulgesetz bis zum Wiener Veranstaltungsgesetz, um nur einige Beispiele zu nennen. 1999 wurde der Beschluss gefasst, durch den Einsatz von Gebärdensprachdolmetscherinnen und -dolmetschern auch gehörlosen Bürgerinnen und Bürgern die Möglichkeit zu geben, die Gemeinderats- und Landtagssitzungen mitzuverfolgen. Seit 2000 werden die Sitzungen auch live im Internet übertragen.

Der Gemeinderat
Der Gemeinderat beschließt das Budget und wichtige Verordnungen wie Flächenwidmungspläne und Bebauungspläne. Er ist das höchste Organ der Stadt. Die Gemeinderätinnen und Gemeinderäte wählen auch den Bürgermeister, die Vizebürgermeisterinnen und Vizebürgermeister sowie die Stadträtinnen und Stadträte.

Die Parteien
Gegenwärtig setzt sich der Wiener Landtag und der Wiener Gemeinderat aus Vertreterinnen und Vertretern von fünf Parteien zusammen.

The Vienna Parliament
The Vienna Landtag has 100 members. They represent the people of Vienna who are eligible to vote. The members of the Vienna State Parliament are also municipal councillors. This identity also means that the electoral period for the state parliament corresponds to that of the municipal council. In Vienna, a period of government lasts five years. The state laws are passed in the Vienna state parliament. They range from the Vienna Waste Management Act to the Vienna Building Code, the Vienna Youth Protection Act and the Vienna Schools Act to the Vienna Events Act, to name just a few examples. In 1999, the decision was made to use sign language interpreters to give deaf citizens the opportunity to follow municipal and state parliament meetings. Since 2000, the meetings have also been broadcast live on the Internet.

The Council
The municipal council decides on the budget and important regulations such as zoning plans and development plans. It is the highest body in the city. The municipal councilors also elect the mayor, the deputy mayors and the city councillors.

The parties
The Vienna State Parliament and the Vienna City Council are currently made up of representatives from five parties.
