In the town of Marathon, the Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC between Greece and Persia. According to the legend, after the victory of the Greeks, a Greek runner (Phidippides) ran towards Athens a distance of 42 km to announce the victory. The runner reached his goal, delivered the news and died.
