The gate is one of the remnants left from the city wall of Florence in the 13th century.

The sign that was placed back in the 13th century contains technical details about the length and size of the gate, the walls and more.
On the sign there is also the symbol of Florence (the Lily of Florence) as well as the People’s Cross which was also used as a symbol of the Republic of Florence
The current sign is a copy of the original sign, which was replaced during the restoration done in 2018.
