Histoire de Paris

Eglise Saint-Sauveur

Comments:
One of the series of signs describing historical places in Paris. The signs were placed starting in 1992 and are also called sucettes Starck (Starck’s Lollipops) after Philippe Starck who designed them.

The sign depicts the Saint-Sauveur church, a Catholic church that has been documented since the 13th century AD, and stood in this place until 1797.

The place where the church stood and where the sign is located was photographed on the same day Click for a larger image

History of Paris

Saint-Sauveur Church
The St-Sauveur church occupied the location of n°2, 4 and 4 bis. Mentioned as early as 1216, it was rebuilt in the 16th century. A chapel of the Virgin was added in 1713, decorated by Blondel, le Moyne and Coypel. Its trompe-l’oeil ceiling was considered "the most learned in the art of perspective that can be seen in Paris". The church housed the tombs of famous actors from the Hôtel de Bourgogne: Turlupin, Gaultier-Garguille, Gros-Guillaume and Guillot-Gorju. When they appeared on stage, "they didn’t care about talking to make people laugh, we laughed too much without that". Demolished between 1778 and 1785, its reconstruction was undertaken according to Poyet’s plans. The Revolution interrupted the construction, then the upper parts were demolished in 1797.
