History of Paris

The birthplace of the University
Opened at the beginning of the 13th century on the old Garlande enclosure, rue du Fouarre connected rue de la Bûcherie to rue Galande in the Middle Ages. Now the headquarters of the Faculty of Arts, it takes its name from the hay bales used as seats by the students. The courses are first taught in the open air, then in the ten schools named after the old inns, the Red Horse or the Golden Eagle: a few licensed masters occupy the lower rooms, where they teach for a fee. , and the floors are rented year-round to accommodate the students. Dante stayed there in 1304, and Buridan professed philosophy there around 1330. In 1358, the disorders were such that it was closed at night by chains stretched at each end!
