תל אביב נוסדה בשנת 1909 על גבעות חול שוממות על ידי 66 משפחות יהודיות שיצאו מיפו.

השכונה נקראה תחילה "אחוזת בית", אולם בהמשך הוצע השם "תל-אביב" - תרגומו של נחום סוקולוב לשם ספרו האוטופי של הרצל, "אלטנוילד", שפירושו ארץ ישנה-חדשה.

הספר החזוני מתאר חברה יהודית מתקדמת, מודרנית, פלורליסטית וסובלנית. ללא ספק - בחירה שאפתנית לשכונה קטנה.

ואולם, תושביה הראשונים של העיר ביקשו לא רק אוטופיה אלא גם חיים נוחים, שכללו מים זורמים, גינות מוריקות - וגם קיוסק בלב השדרה.

The First Kiosk
Tel Aviv was founded in 1909 on desolate sand dunes by 66 Jewish families from Jaffa.
Tel Aviv was named after Altneuland, the title of the utopian novel written by the founding father of the Zionist movement, Theodor Herzl The visionary book described an advanced, modern creative and progressive Jewish society. This was, no doubt, an ambitious choice of a name for a small neighborhood.
However, the city’s first residents sought not only utopia, but also a comfortable life that included indoor plumbing, gardens, and even a kiosk in the middle of the boulevard, a restoration of which still thrives today.

تم تأسيس مدينة تل أبيب عام 1909 فوق تلال الرمل المهجورة على يد 66 عائلة يهودية انتقلت إليها من يافا . ’ حيث أطلق اسم " أحوزات بيت " على الحي ، إلا أنه لاحقاً اقترح ميناحيم شينكين اسم تل أبيب - حسب الاسم الذي استعمله ناحوم سوكولوف في ترجمة رواية هرتسل الخيالية المسماة " ألتنويلاند " ، أي البلد القديم الجديد . حيث تطرح هذه الرواية رؤية مفادها قيام مجتمع يهودي متقدم ومعاصر إبداعي ومتحضر ، يتسم بالتنوع والتسامح . وذلك بدون شك خيار طموح لحي صغير . إلا أن أول سكان المدينة لم يلتمسوا اليوتوبيا فحسب وإنما الحياة المريحة أيضا ، التي شملت المياه الجارية والحدائق الخضراء - وكذلك الكشك الواقع في قلب الجادة والذي ما زال يزدهر لغاية هذا اليوم .
