NOTO

CHURCH OF SAN CARLO BORROMEO

The church, attributed to the architect Gagliardi, was built for the Jesuit order of Noto between 1730 and 1750.
The façade has a concave shape and develops vertically in three orders of Doric, lonic and Corinthian columns. On the third level, a central four-leaf clover oculus is placed between two perforated niches.
The interior of the church, with three naves, preserves some works attributed to the painter Costantino Carasi from Noto.

Comments:
The city of Noto and several other cities in the Val di Noto region (southeast Sicily), were recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2002 mainly because of the late Baroque style that characterizes many of their sites.

The Catholic Church is dedicated to Carlo Borromeo (1538-1584), who was the Archbishop of Milan, founded the "Vatican Academy" and was recognized as a Christian saint.
The church was built in the 18th century after the earthquake of 1693 that badly hit Sicily, and seems to have been designed by Rosario Gagliardi.
