Clemenceau Garden 1859
The Jardin Clemenceau forms one of the squares of the Champs-Élysées. Its history dates back to 1616, when Marie de Médicis decided to create a landscaped path on marshy land. In 1670, André Le Nôtre designed the Avenue des Champs-Élysées there. Until the beginning of the 19th century, only six houses were built there. The design of the Jardin Clemenceau dates from 1859, when Alphand redesigned the English-style gardens. A statue of Georges Clemenceau stands there, facing that of General de Gaulle installed in 2000.
