Born in Ribemont, France (1618-1686). A French polymath: soldier, military engineer, mathematician, diplomat and architect. He was the first director of the Royal Academy of Architecture (Académie royale darchitecture), founded in 1671. Known as the designer of several triumphal arches, including the Porte Saint-Denis
, the Porte Saint-Bernard (no longer standing)
, and others. He formulated the well-known formula for calculating the comfort and design of staircases - the Blondel formula.
