אתר הנצחה לנופלי אזור מודיעין
בשם אזור מודיעין (שנקרא בעבר מודיעים, כשם מולדת החשמונאים) הכוונה למרחב הגבעות הפתוח הנמצא בין הערים לוד, פתח תקווה ומודיעין.
כיום זהו שטח המועצה האזורית חבל מודיעין. בשנת 1948, ערב מלחמת העצמאות, היו באזור זה מספר יישובים ערבים וביניהם נקודה עברית בודדת - כפר הנוער בן שמן.

על השליטה במרחב ובגבעות התנהלו מספר קרבות. השליטה הייתה חשובה כדי להבטיח את חופש הפעולה בשדה התעופה שליד לוד, להסיר איום אפשרי מעל תל אביב וסביבתה וכן לשם הרחבת מסדרות המעבר בין תל אביב לירושלים.
עיקר הקרבות באזור התנהלו במסגרת מבצע ’דני’, בחודש יולי 1948. במבצע הפעיל צה"ל, לראשונה בתולדותיו, כוח צבאי של חמש חטיבות תחת פיקוד אחד.
בשלב הראשון תקף צה"ל מכיוון גזר שבדרום ומכפר סירקין שבצפון לעבר בן שמן. בשלב השני נכבשו השטחים שממערב לקו זה ובהם שדה התעופה, לוד ורמלה. בשלב השלישי התקדמו הכוחות מזרחה, לעבר מקומה של העיר מודיעין כיום. התקדמות זו קבעה את גבול ישראל-ירדן שלאחר מלחמת העצמאות.

באנדרטה מונצחים הנופלים בקרבות באזור מודיעין במלחמת העצמאות, וכן בני היישובים באזור שנפלו במערכות ישראל.
מסורת חדשה קושרת מקום זה לקברות המכבים.
ברוח זו תאר אחד הלוחמים: "עמדנו בפני האויב ערוכים בקרב יום ופשיטות לילה, הערמנו עליו בתכסיסי קרב והבאנו את רכבו במצור... במכורת המכבים-מודיעין, לימדנו את הלגיון גבורת מכבים מהי...
לפי המסופר בספר מקבים א’ (י"ג, 27), הקים שמעון שבע מצבות, שצורתן פירמידות, על קבר בני משפחתו: אביו מתתיהו הכהן, אימו, ארבעת אחיו שנהרגו בקרבות: אלעזר, יהודה, יוחנן ויונתן, ומצבה נוספת לקברו הוא.
האנדטרה שלפניכם הוקמה בשנת 1981, ועיצובה משחזר את מצבת הפירמידות שהייתה על קברי המכבים.

Commemoration Site for the Fallen in the Modi’in Region
The Modi’in region (formerly known as Modiim, like the homeland of the Hasmoneans) is the open area of hills located between the cities of Lod, Petach Tikva and Modi’in. Today this area is under the jurisdiction of the. Modiin Regional Council. In 1948, on the eve of the War of Independence, there were several Arab villages in the region with one single Jewish area, the Ben Shemen Youth Village located in their midst.

Several battles were fought to control the area and the surrounding hills. Control was essential in order to guarantee freedom of action at the airport near Lod, to remove the threat to Tel Aviv and its surroundings and to widen the passageway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Most of the battles were part of the "Danny" Operation, carried out in July 1948. During this operation, for the first time in history, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) activated a military force of five brigades under one command. In the first stage IDF attacked from the direction of Gezer in the South and Kfar Sirkin in the North toward Ben Shemen. The areas west of this point which included the airport, Lod and Ramle were seized during the second stage. During the third stage the forces advanced eastward towards the current location of the city of Modi’in.
This advancement determined the Jordanian-Israeli, border following the War of Independence.

The soldiers who fell in the battles of the Modi’in region during the War of Independence, and members of the settlements of the region who fell during Israeli military campaigns, are commemorated in this monument.
A new tradition connects this location with battles of the Maccabeans (Hebrew- Maccabim, Maccabees). In this spirit one of the combatants stated; "We stood before the enemy ready for day battles and night raids, we tricked him with battle tactics and seized his vehicle... in the native land of the Maccabeans - Modi’in - the Jordanian soldiers learned what the Maccabean Heroism was.."
According to the Book of Maccabees I (13,28), Shimon set up seven pyramids on the graves of his family: for his father Mathitiahu thc Cohen, for his mother, for his four brothers killed in battles: Elazar, Yehuda, Johanan and Jonathon, and another gravestone for his own grave.
The monument before you was built in 1981 by architect Joseph Asa and its design is a reconstruction of the pyramids built on the Maccabeans’ graves.
