Water Cistern (bor ha’ari)
Cisterns served as water reservoirs in the mountains and lowlands of Israel, where groundwater was too deep to reach and natural springs were scarce. The bell-shaped cisterns were carved in rock and gathered rainwater directed into them through a narrow opening to prevent dirt from entering and water from evaporating.

A circular stone usually covered the cistern’s opening for safekeeping and to prevent people or animals from falling in.

Cisterns, like wells, served as a social gathering place and consequently as the place where love stories began: Rebecca and Abraham’s servant, Jacob and Rachel, Moses and the daughters of Jethro, and more.

The Mishnah mentions a specific profession for cistern excavation and maintenance - bayar (pit keeper).
