המגוון הביולוגי - היסוד לחיינו
המונח "מגוון ביולוגי" (biodiversity) מבטא את עושר החיים על פני כדור הארץ בכל רמות הארגון הביולוגיות - המגוון הגנטי, מגוון המינים ומגוון המערכות האקולוגיות. מגוון מינים רחב בכל אקוסיסטמה משמש ערובה ליציבותה.
המושג "מגוון ביולוגי" מהווה יותר מאשר הגדרה מדעית מחודשת לתיאור עושר החיים: הוא מייצג את התמודדות החברה האנושית עם השינוי וההרס של המערכת האקולוגיות והכחדתם של מינים רבים.
תהליכי הפיתוח המואצים, אשר פוגעים במגוון הביולוגי ומשנים את פני כדור הארץ מוכרים כ"משבר המגוון הביולוגי". בניגוד למשברים אחרים - משבר האנרגיה או משברים פוליטיים עולמיים, שרובם עונתיים וניתנים לתיקון - "משבר המגוון הביולוגי" הוא בלתי הפיך: מין שנכחד לא יחזור עוד.

Biodiversity - the foundation of our lives
The term "biodiversity" expresses the richness of life on Earth at all levels of biological organization - genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity. A wide variety of species in any ecosystem serves as a guarantee for its stability.
The term "biodiversity" is more than a scientific definition to describe the richness of life: it represents the human society’s coping with the change and destruction of the ecosystem and the extinction of many species.
Accelerated development processes, which harm biodiversity and change the earth’s surface are known as the "biodiversity crisis". Unlike other crises - the energy crisis or global political crises, most of which are seasonal and fixable - the "biodiversity crisis" is irreversible: an extinct species will never return.
