סיוע גרמני: משלוח טנקים
(1964-1965)
במסגרת פגישות רוה"מ לוי אשכול עם נשיא ארה"ב לינדון ג’ונסון, סוכם בשנת 1964 על סיוע של כ-250 טנקים מסוג M48, (בצה"ל נקרא מגח).
על מנת להסתיר את מקור האספקה בגין חשש מלחץ מדינות ערב, סוכם שהטנקים יסופקו מעודפי צבא גרמניה. חלקם עברו לאיטליה לצורך שיפוץ, שם עשו את דרכם לישראל.
גרמניה הובילה את שינוע הטנקים לישראל, לצד אימוני משלחת של 40 לוחמי גדוד 79, בפיקוד לימים האלוף ג’קי אבן בביה"ס הגרמני לשריון במונסטר ("מונסטר לאגר").
המבצע להכשרת הגדוד הוגדר כ"סודי ביותר" (באותה תקופה לא התקיימו יחסים דיפלומטיים בין ישראל לגרמניה) ונאסר על המשלחת ליצור קשר עם המקומיים.
בינואר 1965, גדוד 79 הוקם כגדוד "הפטונים" הראשון בחטיבה 7, במחנה נתן מדרום לבאר שבע.
משלחת אימון זו מגדוד 79 הולידה קצינים בכירים רבים, ביניהם האלוף ג’קי אבן שפיקד על מבצע זה.

Germany Supplies Tanks
(1964–1965)
In a series of meetings between Prime Minister Levi Eshkol and US President Lyndon Johnson in 1964, the President agreed to aid Israel by supplying 250 "Patton" (M48) tanks.
In order to avoid pressure from Arab states, it was agreed that Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) surplus tanks would be sent to Israel via Italy.
Germany led the tank transfers as well as the training of a team of 40 soldiers from the 79th Armored Battalion lead by MG Jaacob Even at the Munsterlager armor school.
Israel and Germany had yet to establish diplomatic ties, therefore the IDF soldiers were prohibited from making any contact with the locals.
The first "Patton" battalion in the IDF’s 7th Division was established in 1965 at "Camp Nathan", south of Beersheva and was home to many who later became senior officers such as MG Jackie Even.
