The purpose of Operation Maccabi was to reopen the road to Jerusalem. This road was opened in Operation Nachshon, but since Operation Yevusi to liberate neighborhoods in Jerusalem, the fighters who held the checkpoints along the road were transferred to the Jerusalem front and the road was blocked again by the Arab forces.
