Kibbutz Ramat Rachel, which was surrounded by Arab villages, has been under attack since the beginning of the War of Independence. In May, the kibbutz was attacked by Egyptian army forces and the Jordanian Legion. During the battles, control of the kibbutz shifted from side to side. In the third battle, the Fifth Battalion took part, along with forces of the Moriah Battalion (Etzioni Brigade) and Irgun (Etzel) forces. At the end of the battle, the kibbutz remained in Israeli hands.
