Even Israel - the Sixth Neighborhood
The Even Israel (Stone of Israel) foundation stone was laid in 1875. The area was divided up into 53 plots (numerological value of the word "even"); the name derived from Jacob’s blessing to Joseph: "But his bow remained in strength, and the arms of his hands were, made strong by the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob (From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel)" (Genesis 49:24)
The houses were built around a planted courtyard housing 2 synagogues, a cistem and baking oven.
Gates led to Jaffa Road and Agrippas Street. In his memoirs, author Ya’akov Yehoshua, a native of the neighborhood and a great grandson of Rabbi Yitzchak Prague O’Platka wrote:
"Some of the neighborhood lanes were so narrow that the sunshine never penetrated and on the dark nights we were afraid to go through. But overall, the neighborhood, with its’ generous courtyard, basked in the sunlight, and laundry fluttered throughout..."
