Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden
The establishment of the botanical garden at Mikve Israel is the initiative of Eliyahu Krause, the school’s principal (1914-1954), and of the agronomist Baruch Chizik and the plantation teacher Shmuel Yedidya.
Between the years 1921-1928 there were a few acclimatization gardens.

The botanical garden was designed as an acclimatization garden in 1928 with the support of the agronomist Professor Otto Warburg, who was president of the Zionist Organization, and designed by the garden architect Yechiel Segal. The area of the garden is about 90 dunams.

The main goal in establishing the garden was to adapt plants from different countries in the world to the climatic conditions in the Land of Israel.

The garden has acclimatized trees and shrubs representing about 1,200 species of seed plants, by families and botanical departments.

Teacher and botanist David Zeidenberg has worked at the Botanical Garden for many years, from the founding of the garden until the day Mr. Zeidenberg died in 1990.
