In 1918, after the British army converted the Jaffa-Jerusalem railway line to standard gauge, it was operated mainly by the army’s steam locomotives. The conversion work and shunting was carried out mainly by 0-6-0 Saddle Tank (ST) locomotives made by the British firm of Manning Wardle, while the regular passenger and freight trains used old 0-6-0 locomotives purchased from the British London & South Western Railway (LSWR). After the war, large number of American Baldwin 4-6-0 locomotives were imported, some of which continued in service in Israel until the end of steam age in 1959.
