Hendrik Tollens was a Dutch poet, whose best-known work is the Dutch national anthem. The statue dedicated to Tollens also because he was a resident of Rotterdam is one of the oldest sculptures in Rotterdam that was erected as early as 1860.

The sculpture was created by the German sculptor Jean Theodore Stracké
