הקרבות על נוטרדאם היו מהמכריעים להצלת ירושלים בתש"ח
הקרבות על אכסניית נוטרדאם בתש"ח הם שבלמו את פלישת הליגיון הירדני מלחדור לירושלים המערבית. הודות להם נשארה ירושלים בריבונות ישראלית וחזרה למעמדה ההסטורי כבירת ישראל. כך גם נסללה הדרך לאיחוד העיר במלחמת ששת הימים.

קרבות קשים על אכסניית נוטרדאם התחוללו במלחמת העצמאות מול הליגיון הירדני. המבנה חולש על המעבר מירושלים המזרחית למערבית. שליטה בו היתה חיונית להצלת העיר. בקרבות השתתפו תחילה לוחמי לח"י ובהמשך, במסגרת מבצע "קלשון" של "ההגנה", נכבש המבנה על ידי גדוד "מוריה" מחטיבת "עציוני" עם תגבורת לוחמי חיל השדה (חי"ש) מתל אביב. לוחמי חיל המשמר (חי"ם) וגדנ"עי פלוגת "יהונתן" הצטרפו ללוחמים. בקרבות נבלמו בנוטרדאם משורייני הליגיון בדרכם לחדור לירושלים המערבית. עם נסיגת הליגיון ושליטת "ההגנה" במבנה בט"ו באייר תש"ח (4.48 24) הובטחה השליטה הישראלית במערב העיר.
הפגזות הליגיון נמשכו עד סוף חודש תמוז תש"יח (יולי 1948).

كانت المعارك التي دارت حول فندق النوتردام من أكثر معارك إنقاذ القدس حسما خلال حرب 1948 قادت المعارك الضارية التي دارت مع الجيش الأردني في فندق النوتردام خلال حرب 1948 إلى توقف عمليات هذا الجيش لغزو القدس الغربية ، ما ضمن بقاء القدس تحت السيادة الإسرائيلية وعودتها إلى وضعها التاريخي كعاصمة لدولة إسرائيل .

The grueling battles that took place at the Hospice of Notre Dame during the War of Independence against the Arab Legion, curbed its invasion into West Jerusalem. Thanks to those battles, Jerusalem remained under Israeli sovereignty and returned to its historic status as capital of Israel.

במהלך הקרבות הקשים על אכסניית נוטרדאם במלחמת העצמאות נפגעו ונפלו בגבורה לוחמים רבים ונגרם הרס רב
خلال المعارك الضارية سقط العديد من القتلى والجرحى في صفوف المقاتلين والذين البطولات ، كما لحق بالمكان دمار هائل

אכסניית נוטרדאם נפגעה קשות במהלך הקרבות כמו כן, בי"ג באייר תש"ח (22.5.48) פוצצו חבלני "ההגנה" את קיר החזית הקדמי של נוטרדאם שהתמוטט על הכביש וחסם את משורייני הליגיון מלחדור לרחוב יפו.

משוריין של הליגיון אשר נפגע בי"א באייר תש"ח (20.5.48) מרובה אנטי טנקי שהפעיל הלוחם אברהם לוי, וכן מבקבוק מולוטוב שהושלך לעברו מנוטרדם על ידי הגדנ"עי מרדכי רוטנברג. לוי נותר פצוע על הכביש שעות רבות עד לחילוצו. הפגיעה במשוריין עצרה את טור המשוריינים כולו מלחדור לרחוב יפו.
המשוריין נותר כסמל בחזית נוטרדאם עד מלחמת ששת הימים.
בהמשך, בט"ו באייר תש"ח (24.5.46.) ראובן וינשטיין וד"ר עמנואל קניג מגדוד מוריה, השליכו רימונים לעבר טור משוריינים מתקרב ומנעו את חדירתו לירושלים המערבית. פעולה זו הביאה לפציעתם ולמותם למחרת.

הדווידקה היתה מרגמה מתוצרת בית שהופעלה על ידי "ההגנה" בקרבות תש"ח. מטח שלושה פגזים שנורו ממנה לחצר נוטרדאם על ידי הלוחם עזרא סיטון בט"ו באייר תש"ח (24.5.48) הביא לנסיגת הליגיון ולשליטת ה"הגנה " במקום

An armored member of the Legion who was wounded on May 20, 1948, with an anti-tank rifle operated by the fighter Avraham Levy, as well as a Molotov cocktail thrown at him from Notre Dame by GDNA Mordechai Rotenberg. Levy remained wounded on the road for many hours until he was rescued. The armored vehicle stopped the entire armored column from infiltrating Jaffa Street.
The armored car remained a symbol on the front of Notre Dame until the Six Day War.
Later, on May 24, 1946, Reuven Weinstein and Dr. Emanuel Koenig of the Moriah Battalion threw grenades at an approaching armored column and prevented him from entering West Jerusalem. This operation resulted in their injury and death the next day.

The Davidka was a homemade mortar used by the Haganah in the battles of 1958. A barrage of three shells fired from it into the courtyard of Notre Dame by the fighter Ezra Siton on May 24, 1948 led to the withdrawal of the Legion and the control of the Haganah.
