THE IMPERIAL PALACE VIENNA
served as the residence of the Habsburg , a dynasty of rulers of large parts of Europe for some 700 years. The Habsburg Empire was a multi-ethnic and multi-religious empire that had a strong political, administrative, social and economic impact on territories that include or are part of today’s Austria and Hungary as well as other Central and South-Eastern European states .
It features on the European Union’s list of European Heritage sites because of the significant role it plays in the history and culture of Europe.

A site declared the European Heritage Label, sites that the European Union has defined as cornerstones in European history.

The Hofburg Palace served as the winter residence of the Habsburg House.

The sign is on the Swiss gate of the palace, a gate so named because of the Swiss Guard soldiers who guarded it between 1745-1767. This gate leads to the imperial treasure.
