דקל וושינגטוניה
נשתל כעץ נוי - כשהבריטים הגיעו לסיור בקיבוץ עם ועדת הספר הלבן הם ראו ברז מטפטף ולידו העץ. הם שאלו "מה זה" וכשאמרו להם שזה עץ נוי, תגובתם הייתה "היהודים האלה רק באים וכבר שותלים עצי נוי". גרעינים שונים שעברו בגבעת חיים שמו להם במטרה את העץ, כדי לתלות עליו דגלים עם שם הגרעין.

Washingtonia palm
Planted as an ornamental tree - when the British came to tour the kibbutz with the White Paper Committee, they saw a dripping tap and the tree next to it. They asked "what is it" and when they were told it was an ornamental tree, their response was "these Jews are just coming and already planting ornamental trees". Various groups that passed through Givat Haim purposefully placed the tree in order to hang flags on it with the name of the group.
