צריח המסגד נבנה בזמן הסולטן סוליימן המפואר שכן האולם הצבאי הסמוך לו הוסב למסגד.
בפי העם נודע הצריח בשם "מגדל דוד".

The minaret of the mosque was built during the reign of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, as the nearby military hall had been converted into a mosque. The minaret came to be known popularly as "David’s Tower" - the name previously used for the massive tower in the Citadel.
