PAVILHÃO DE CAÇA DO REI D. CARLOS (1889-1908)
HUNTING PAVILION OF KING D. CARLOS (1889-1908)

At the end of the 18th century, the existence of a palace in the Celebredo, attributed to D. Maria I, was rebuilt in 1893 by King D. Carlos, becoming his hunting lodge.

The Real Tapada de Mafra has always been a privileged place of leisure and hunting for Portuguese monarchs, however, during the reigns of D. Luís (1861-1889) and D. Carlos (1889-1908), this space knew its golden period. Frequent visits and hunts required a space for support. The hunting pavilion consists of a dining room, a pantry, a King’s rest room and sanitary facilities.
Note the existence of plumbing, since 1885, for the pavilion and fountain located immediately behind the building.

Later on, after the implantation of the republic, it is subject to a new improvement, maintaining its characteristics and starts to be used for state protocol events. Contemporary with the Pavilion, the "Jardim do Salabredo" contains since 1893 statues of the sculptor Machado de Castro, assistant to the Italian master Alessandro Giusti (1715-1799) director of the Mafra Sculpture School, which was created by D. José I.
