ÁGUA, UM BEM ESSENCIAL
WATER, AN ESSENTIAL GOOD

A close relationship between the Royal building and the Tapada Nacional de Mafra.

The location of the new palace may have different interpretations or readings, but the fact that there is water in the surroundings to supply the Royal building was essential.

Water became more and more important with the increase in the number of inhabitants of the convent, and the use for the Royal House (Palace).

The studies would certainly have preceded the construction of the Royal building, but, it was the Engineer Manuel da Maia who in 1738 marked the path and the design of an aqueduct 5402 meters long. which runs from the grounds of Tapada to the Jardim do Cerco, where, with the support of a great Nora, supplied the Royal building, Gardens, horticultural gardens and several drinking fountains for animals.

INTERESTING FACTS
The aqueduct is composed by 50 surface captures referring to 83 springs, a hydraulic system with water mothers, chambers and junction boxes.
All the layout of the aqueduct is adapted to the topography surrounding the elevations and taking exclusive advantage of the gravitational force.
