Sonia Rykiel
(1930-2016)

Making “the folds of dresses and the pages” of books coexist... Dressing the walls and windows of a luxury establishment with numerous works... Allowing the softness of the knits to rub shoulders with the poetry of the words... In setting up her first store in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in 1968, Sonia Rykiel proclaimed her love of literature. “I invented an image, a paper woman written in the folds of the fabric, the threads of the knitting, the colors of the flesh.” Herself a writer of novels and children’s stories, the red-haired designer asserts a fashion that is intimately woven with letters and the arts, reflecting the spirit of the surrounding streets. A figure in the cultural abundance of the Left Bank, Rykiel had an alley dedicated to his name there in 2018.
