(1885-1979)

“Madame Delaunay has made such a beautiful book of colors that my poem is more drenched in light than my life”: in 1912, the painter Sonia Delaunay met the poet Blaise Cendrars, at the home of her friend Guillaume Apollinaire. The following year, the two artists created their first simultaneous work. With The Prose of the Transsiberian and Little Jehanne of France, composed in four hands, text and colors correspond in a new way. Poetry, as textual as it is plastic, develops on a two-meter high support, between book and painting, between reading and contemplation. In her workshop on rue Saint Simon, Delaunay, already interested in bookbinding, did not just illustrate her friend’s words. She deploys the bright colors that characterize her work, inherited from the fabrics and traditional habitats of her childhood, evoking in a non-figurative way the rhythm of the famous train which gives its name to the work.
