בתחילת שנות ה-70 צה"ל רכש טנקים מדגם פטון M60A1 מתוצרת ארצות הברית. דגם זה נחשב לטנק המערכה המתקדם ביותר באותה עת. טנקים אלה השתתפו במלחמת יום הכיפורים בסיני ובמלחמת שלום הגליל. הטנק עבר כמה שדרוגים ובהם מערכת ייצוב לתותח מיגון ריאקטיבי, מערכת כיבוי אש אוטומטית ומערכת בקרת אש נותקדמת.

In the early 1970’s, the IDF acquired American M60A1 Patton tanks. These were considered the most advanced tanks at the time. They took part in the Yom Kippur War, in Sinai, and in Operation Peace for Galilee. The tanks were upgraded to include a gun stabilization system, reactive add-on armor, an automatic fire extinguishing system and an advanced fire control system.

Reactive Armor against Anti-Tank missiles, based on cassettes which consist of steal plates and an explosive layer in between. Upon hitting. the penetration capability of the missile through the tank wall is eliminated and the tank crew survive.
