The IDF acquired American M48 Patton tanks. They were upgraded to include a Diesel engine, a 105 mm gun, a low silhouette commander’s cupola and a modern radio communication system. These tanks were the backbone of the Israeli Armored Corps during the 1969 War of Attrition and the Yom Kippur War. They also took part in Operation Peace for Galilee. Later upgrades included computerized fire control and automatic fire extinguishing systems. This tank’s silhouette inspired the design of the IDF tank fighter pin
